“It was such a pleasure attending Natalia’s class at New Cumnock Town Hall.

Not only was Natalia supportive and understanding that I have no previous knowledge of art techniques. Especially drawing? 2B or H2! It was a minefield seeing Natalia demonstrating on a large sheet of paper. The penny dropped. Thank you so much. Wishing you every success in the future – perhaps Dumfries House? Annie x “

“I always hated still life as an art student, it felt unattainable and beyond my capabilities as I just didn’t feel what my fellow students could see. Turns out I didn’t have the right formula! Natalia gave me an understanding that is accessible to anyone and everyone.
Trust the process, take on the instruction, you’ll thrive from it I promise. I will continue to practice and I won’t give up!”

“She’s absolutely brilliant. She teaches you to go with the flow. Nothing is wrong. It doesn’t matter what you put on a bit of paper, you’ll always see something in the picture you’ve created. It’s part of you. People are at different standards, all giving their input. It helps working with a group – they’re on the camera and you talk about it. Instead of crying now, I’ll pick up a paintbrush or pencil – it’s life-changing.”

I had wondered about drawing increasingly over recent years.  My son is a professional artist and yet I was unable to express myself by drawing or painting, having only memories of art lessons at secondary school where my attempts were met, essentially with scorn by the teacher, and again some plate painting spurned by an ‘arty’ woman looking at the group’s work.  After chatting with Natalia during an exhibition at the Mall Galleries, struck by her professionalism and beautiful work, I decided to embark upon a series of art lessons with her.

On the first day Natalia  identified my inclination towards lines and this unearthed childhood memories of enjoying similar activity.  The exercises we then did with intuitive drawing resonated and gave me great enjoyment. We added still life drawing, and Natalia’s teaching methods suit me totally, with consistent explanation and demonstration, and correction of my work.  Her instructions are clear and learning in her studio ensures focus and builds habits of neatness and high standards. We had a seamless transition to online lessons during lockdown and we continue with progress as before.  Natalia requests elegant work and encourages attention to detail. Her effervescent personality is perfect for achieving a cheerful atmosphere. She is intelligent, accomplished, resourceful and imaginative. Natalia instils confidence by choosing appropriate tasks which I have found stretching and satisfying. When I come across a problem she is patient and expert at explaining a solution. Any attempts I make are taken seriously and given great respect.

Has it changed me?  Yes, my observation skills are growing and I am quietly confident that I can produce art that may be beautiful, appealing or fascinating. I have a new activity which brings me challenge and pleasure and which perhaps will inspire other people to experiment with the mystery of art.
